Kingman turquoise comes out of the Mineral Park mine in the Cerbat Mountains northwest of Kingman, Arizona — one of the oldest turquoise workings in North America, and one of the very few American mines still producing today. That matters more than it sounds. Most of the famous Arizona mines have closed or turned to copper, so when a jeweler tells you a stone is Kingman, they are naming a source that is still alive rather than one that exists only in old collections.
The look is what people come for: a bright, saturated blue, usually with a black or silver-grey matrix webbing through it. Kingman runs the full range, from clean sky-blue stones with almost no matrix to dramatic spiderweb patterns, and it also produces the deep “high blue” material that holds its colour beautifully against sterling silver. Because the mine is still active, Kingman is one of the few turquoise varieties where finding a second piece to match a first is a realistic hope — a rarity in this trade.
